“I enter the surface of the canvas almost explosively.”

Verdier paints on sheets of paper or canvases spread out on the floor. Her painting is vertical, playing with gravity, the weight of the paintbrush, the load of the ink and her body. Suspended between heaven and earth, the paintbrush is guided by spirit and hand, its handle at times hanging from over 10 meters of rope and held in place by a pair of bicycle handlebars. Her physical engagement is key: together with preparatory ascetic practice and “suchness” (the path of spontaneous expression), it forms the basis of Verdier’s work. Beyond this spontaneity of the stroke, the ink flow is also guided in producing the work, in particular in her very large formats. Verdier thus disengages from the rules of Chinese painting: she can go on. add to and rework the matter until she finds just the right form.”

Located in Arosa, Switzerland, this hotel’s wellness center was created by Architect Mario Botta with not only healing properties from within– but a beautiful piece of architecture to create positive energy from the outside as well.

Built in 2006, this gorgeous Tschuggen Grand Hotel and Wellness Centre (or Berg Oase) is mainly level with the ground with the exception of the metaphorical trees that stick up and protrude through the deep snow in the winter months. Discreet integration was a main concern of the planning, and a glazed walkway connects the centre with the hotel– keeping things clean and continuous. At night the Berg Oase becomes a magically lit place, showing the life and ongoings within.

The delicate swirls of pink and gold in this image could have come from Botticelli’s brush, but there’s nothing angelic about the subject, a melanoma cell. It is seen here by an ionabrasion scanning electron microscope that uses a method of 3D imaging being developed at the U.S. National Cancer Institute. The microscope sends beams of gallium ions across an object, blasting away layers of the surface 20 nanometers at a time. By scanning each newly created surface, the microscope can compile three-dimensional images with unprecedented detail and resolution, says image creator Donald Bliss, a medical illustrator at the National Library of Medicine in Bethesda, Maryland. The images show almost too much detail—“It’s like looking at a bowl of spaghetti suspended in clear Jell-O,” he says—so Bliss chose to highlight some of the data. Here, he shows the nucleus as the dark sphere, engulfed by mitochondria (in pink) and endoplasmic reticulum (in gold). (nsf.gov)

Because of the unique technique, the picture got an honorable mention during Science Magazine’s 2008 International Science & Engineering Visualization Challenge.

Academia. What a scam.

In 1971, the Supreme Court ruled in Griggs v. Duke Power Co., in the first and most famous of the disparate impact theory cases, that the use of broad-based aptitude tests in hiring practices was a violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act. Around 1978, college tuition costs began to skyrocket, and haven’t let up since.

Coincidence? I think not.

The answer to busting the hyperinflationary tuition cost curve is to overturn the Griggs ruling. Employers, deprived of the opportunity to directly screen job applicants, have turned to the next available proxy tool of judgment: college degrees. Naturally, this initially caused the value of a college degree to rise, a stampede of mediocrities rushed into the hallowed halls, and then the college degree was gutted of its worth as employers began to realize how many useless grads academia was churning out. In the fallout, the game was ratcheted up a rung, tuition costs blew up because academia now had monopoly power over employer screening (think of academia as an entrenched and enriched middleman), and the master’s degree has become worth what the bachelor’s was in the past. And the bachelor’s degree? Well, say hello to communications and women’s studies majors. For a long time, college tuition was inexpensive and students often worked their way through a 4-year degree, graduating debt-free.

Faculty and university admin, of course, hate the thought of Griggs being overturned, and disparate impact cases in general going the way of the dodo. Who could blame them? They know that “disparate impact” is code for “butters my bread”.

Finnish Artist Ilkka Halso - “My work deals with man’s ambivalent relation to nature. It is typical for human beings to mold nature, justifying their actions by their aesthetic and economic aspirations. But nature cannot endure everything. In my photographs, control over nature has acquired a concrete form. The elements of nature have been rethought and have, for logistical purposes, been packed into modules that are easier to handle. The whole of nature is stored in a gigantic warehouse complex and the most common types of nature from soil and flora to fauna can be easily assembled into working ecosystems. What is happening? Has nature been evacuated to await better times, or has it been simplified into merchandise and absurd tableaux? I am looking into the future. I don’t like what I see.”

Erica Simone: Nue York

Erica Simone states that she is not an exhibitionist. Through these public, nude self-portraits, she questions how we present ourselves to the world: namely, what would happen if we didn’t have fashion to offer society a desired impression of ourselves? While she acknowledges that fashion is a means for self-expression, Simone also sees its potential to segregate groups and denote social status.

Simone, who is also a fashion photographer, realizes that the way we dress can inspire particular responses from others, and her work ponders at what point we become too involved in the way we appear.

After a brush with the law for appearing naked for this project, Simone also questions why society insists on us appearing in anything other than our natural state: “Why can we be arrested for being naked in the street, when as human beings, we are born naked? Is nudity inherently sexual or is nudity just a part of being human? Why does society typically equate nudity to sex?”
